Creating parameters for sustainable growth
Governance & Risk Management
During periods of stability or stagnation, governance and risk management can seem unimportant. “We know our jobs and how to do them. We’re wasting time doing documentation that could be spent on helping client ABC with XYZ.” Every time an organization goes through a period of significant change, the governance practices get tested.
If your controls are too rigid, a lack of autonomy and inefficiency will have a negative impact on the culture. On the other hand, a lack of controls or weak controls will lead to individual staff feeling the burden of collective decision-making responsibilities, creating a toxic culture based on fear. It is the role of the Board and senior leaders to create a culture where staff feel empowered and valued. You spend a lot of money on your people, it would behoove you to get value out of that by providing the parameters for them to operate and then trusting their skills and expertise to execute effectively.
Finding the right balance is an ongoing commitment to engaging with your people, being intentional about how decisions are made, and being transparent about your values. Thankfully, there are templates and resources to make this work much easier.
Our founder, Greg, spent much of his early career in performance measurement and management and it remains an area he is passionate about. From risk-control matrices to ethical allocation frameworks, balanced scorecards and more, a few critical tools applied effectively can help you build a robust, thoughtful, and non-intrusive governance structure that reduces risk and increases value to your team. With modern technology, a small amount of meaningful data points that have been effectively curated to the target demographic can add profound value to effective decision making.
